General Guidelines for Medical Education Grant Requests

Medical education grant requests must demonstrate the ability to meet unmet educational needs of the target audience and encourage the improvement of patient outcomes (medical education grant requests for CME programs must be completely independent from Elan). The selection of medium and format should be commensurate with the educational needs, the audience, learning preferences, geography, content complexity, and other factors which contribute to educational effectiveness. The types of organizations eligible to apply for grants include hospitals, medical centers, professional societies and associations.

These include, but are not limited to:
  • Educational support to professional medical societies
  • Symposia/satellite symposia
  • Meetings, conferences, seminars or teleconferences
  • Webcasts
  • Printed media (e.g. monographs, newsletters)
  • Recorded programs (e.g. podcasts)
  • Interactive digital-media programs (e.g. Internet, CD-ROMs)
  • Fellowship/Fellow Educational programs
Medical education grant submissions should be made at least 10 weeks prior to the event date to ensure all necessary review and paperwork is completed in a timely manner. All applications must be submitted online and include the following information:
  • Official request letter on institutional letterhead stating how grant funds will be distributed
  • A program or agenda of events with specific topics and speakers, date(s) and location of event
  • Amount requested and budget
  • Detailed needs assessment
  • Tax ID and/or verification of a signed W-9 or W8-BEN
  • Number of anticipated attendees for the event, target audience, and whether the event is multi-sponsored or a single sponsorship
  • Accreditation status

Requests may be subject to rejection if information is incomplete or missing
